about the Artist

PARK SUNWOU

The artist continues to work on building up colors with
porcelain clay. Using plasterboard, he builds up several
layers, cuts them, and creates three-dimensional shapes.
In his work, his concerns and experiments overlap each other
like the layers of a cross-section. He thinks about where
the shape will be placed and what kind of user it will
be used for, and listens to the small stories that users
tell him. He welcomes the communication surrounding his
work, and fills it with his own colors through everyday
language and experiences.

“Yeomim”—a term describing the act of closing or overlapping, such as drawing
together the edges of a garment or the meeting of two window panels—serves as
the conceptual motif of this work. Infused with traditional Korean imagery,
the piece highlights soft, graceful curves. The artist introduces natural lines
along the vessel’s rim and overlapping surfaces, expanding the sculptural
expression of yeomim. By evoking the collar of a jeogori(traditional Korean
jacket) or the layered folds of hanbok, the work emphasizes the refined elegance
inherent in Korean tradition.
