about the Artist

JANG WOOCHUL

Jang Woochul worked at a magazine publishing company
until 2017, after which he quit to become a photographer.
He primarily takes photos of flowers, but also captures
portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. He has created
several series, including 'Flowers, City,' where he photographs
flowers from various cities, 'Flowers, Well Tempered,'
which expresses the balance created by flowers interacting
with each other, and 'Flowers, Noon,' which captures flowers
bathed in midday light. While he sometimes takes photos of
flowers he encounters by chance on the streets or in nature,
he also works with flowers purchased from flower markets.
After leaving the purchased flowers for 2–3 days, they
seem to engage in a struggle for dominance and somehow
reach a certain balance on their own. When this happens
and aligns with the image the artist envisions, he picks
up his camera. Jang Woochul, who gives flowers the time
to wait, uses all his energy to dream of the picture he
wants. This is his way of avoiding becoming a photographer
who inevitably turns into a hunter.

Flowers Well-Tempered #71

Jang Woochul’s work deals with the temporality of flowers, which are living objects.
His work is not in the typical format of still life photography that requires the addition
and subtraction of elements, but rather seeks to create images that track and convey
the intrinsic properties of the objects. The frames are made by gently cutting
bright-colored pine wood. The back of the frame is signed, and a certificate of
authenticity is provided along with the work.
